Rugby: Lions de Fer among men’s Team and Kigali Sharks women’s won GMT 2022 TROPHY

On Saturday, May 21, the Rwanda Rugby Federation organized the Annual Competition for the Remembrance of the Genocide against the Tutsi, held at the Red Cross Stadium in Kacyiru. It is a Championship won by the Lion de Fer Team in the Men’s Division and the Kigali Sharks in the Women’s Division.

The last tournament was played in 2019 before Covid-19, and the other was won by Lion de Fer in the Men’s.

This time Rwanda commemorates the 28th anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi, which was attended by 9 men’s and 3 women’s teams, while UR Nyagatare’s men’s and women’s teams failed to participate. , Lion de Fer in the Women’s category and the Goma Okapi Team in the Democratic Republic of Congo also did not participate in the Competition.

In the first round, the teams that met between them in the Qualifiers in both categories, in the Men’s category 4 were the first to immediately qualify for the ½ Games, while in the Women’s category they were counted as the winners, who won the most Games.

After the Men’s pools games , the teams of; Lion de Fer, Kigali Sharks, UR Rukara and Thousand Hills immediately secured a ½-match ticket.

In the final, Lion de Fer won the Cup against Thousand Hills 19-0, while the Kigali Sharks won third place with UR Rukara 17-00.

The Rwanda Rugby Federation (RRF) as the umbrella organisation that unites the entire rugby fraternity in Rwanda. RRF has been administering, developing and generally organising all rugby activities since 2002, not only through out Rwanda but on the continental level as well. The RRF has since grown further countrywide with over 800 active players, 300 female players, a robust fun club, ardent well wishers and intensive involvement in the development of the game in over 240 schools from all districts in Rwanda not to mention the RRF’s participation in community projects.
