Rwanda Rugby Federation Kicks Off Rugby Rising Play Project with 16 TTCs

On 17th January 2025, The Rwanda Rugby Federation conducted an Introductory Meeting for the Rugby Rising Play project, generously funded by World Rugby.

The meeting convened principals from all 16 Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), officials from the Schools Sport Association (Federation du Sport Scolaire), and representatives from the Rwanda Education Board. 

The primary objectives of the project are as follows:

  • Increase the active participation of teenage girls in Rugby.
  • Expand the reach of Rugby throughout schools across the country.
  • Promote Rugby’s core values of Discipline, Respect, Solidarity, and Passion among young players and contributing to education on preventing teenage pregnancies through sport for social impact.
  • Enhance the visibility of Rugby, particularly women’s Rugby.
    Key anticipated impacts include:
  • Increased  of females in Rugby, particularly T1 Rugby.
  • Rapid expansion of Rugby in primary schools, contributing to the reduction of teenage pregnancies in our communities.

Following thorough deliberations, the principals expressed keen enthusiasm to commence the project and pledged their full support for its successful implementation. It was decided to roll out the project in two phases: starting with the first group of 8 TTCs, followed by the remaining 8 in the subsequent phase.

Mr. Erneste Sibomana, Second Vice President of the Schools Sport Association, commended the Rwanda Rugby Federation for its proactive involvement in various initiatives and assured continued support whenever needed.

He also lauded the commitment shown by the TTCs principals, noting their 100% attendance which guarantees their effective engagement in the project.

Mr. Fideli Kagesera, representing the Rwanda Education Board and responsible for Sport Teachers Training, emphasized the importance of sport development starting with youth in schools.

He praised the project’s design to introduce T1 Rugby to student teachers, who will subsequently promote the sport in schools. He encouraged other federations to learn from this initiative for future endeavors.

President Kamanda Tharcisse of the Rwanda Rugby Federation expressed gratitude to World Rugby for selecting their project. He thanked all attendees, especially the TTCs principals, the Rwanda Education Board, and the Schools Sport Association, highlighting their collaborative efforts to develop Rugby and address community challenges such as teenage pregnancies through sport for social impact.

The Rwanda Rugby Federation (RRF) as the umbrella organisation that unites the entire rugby fraternity in Rwanda. RRF has been administering, developing and generally organising all rugby activities since 2002, not only through out Rwanda but on the continental level as well. The RRF has since grown further countrywide with over 800 active players, 300 female players, a robust fun club, ardent well wishers and intensive involvement in the development of the game in over 240 schools from all districts in Rwanda not to mention the RRF’s participation in community projects.
